Celebrate Treasure Beach's fishing heritage with traditional canoes, fresh seafood and beach festivities.
The Treasure Beach Hook ‘n’ Line Canoe Tournament is a colourful celebration of Jamaica’s traditional fishing culture, bringing local fishermen, families and visitors together along the beautiful shores of Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth.
Organised by BREDS, the Treasure Beach Foundation, this popular annual event takes place over Jamaica’s National Heroes’ Day holiday weekend in October.
Combining traditional fishing competitions, lively beachside activities, delicious Jamaican food and a welcoming community atmosphere, the tournament offers visitors an authentic glimpse into the maritime traditions of Jamaica’s South Coast.
Traditional Hook-and-Line Fishing
The tournament celebrates the skill and experience of Jamaica’s local fishermen, who head out to sea in traditional fishing canoes.
Using traditional hook-and-line techniques, competitors seek to land the heaviest fish and claim tournament honours.
The competition highlights the knowledge, determination and seafaring traditions that have shaped Treasure Beach’s fishing community for generations.
The Excitement of the Fish Weigh-In
One of the highlights of the weekend is the return of the fishing canoes to Calabash Bay Beach.
Fishermen bring their catches ashore for the official weigh-in, where spectators gather to see which boat has landed the largest fish.
The atmosphere builds as competitors, families and supporters celebrate their catches and await the announcement of the winners.
Boat Races & Beachside Entertainment
Beyond the fishing competition, the tournament traditionally features lively community activities and entertainment.
Past celebrations have included canoe races, games, music, local talent performances and festive beach gatherings.
The combination of sporting competition and community entertainment makes this a particularly enjoyable occasion for visitors.
Fresh Seafood & Jamaican Flavours
Food is an important part of the Hook ‘n’ Line celebrations.
Visitors can enjoy the flavours of Jamaica’s South Coast, with freshly prepared seafood, traditional Jamaican dishes and refreshments adding to the festive atmosphere.
It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience the food and hospitality for which Treasure Beach is known.
Celebrating Treasure Beach’s Fishing Community
At its heart, Hook ‘n’ Line honours the fishermen and families whose traditions remain central to life in Treasure Beach.
The tournament supports the preservation of local fishing culture while strengthening community connections and celebrating the area’s maritime heritage.
Organised by BREDS, the event also contributes to the foundation’s wider mission of supporting sustainable community development in Treasure Beach.
