Calabash International Literary Festival

Fri 21 – Sun 23 May 2027 Jakes, Treasure Beach

Celebrate the magic of storytelling, poetry and music at Calabash Literary Festival seaside in Treasure Beach.

The Calabash International Literary Festival is one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated literary gatherings, bringing together acclaimed authors, poets, storytellers and literature enthusiasts from Jamaica and around the world.

Held every two years at Jakes in the charming fishing village of Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth, this remarkable three-day festival combines world-class literature with live music, stimulating conversations and the relaxed atmosphere of Jamaica’s beautiful South Coast.

Founded in 2001 by novelist Colin Channer, poet Kwame Dawes and producer Justine Henzell, Calabash has earned an international reputation for celebrating creativity, cultural diversity and the power of storytelling.

What to Expect

World-Class Writers & Literary Readings

Experience captivating readings by celebrated novelists, poets and emerging literary voices from Jamaica, the Caribbean and across the globe.

Over the years, the festival has welcomed internationally acclaimed writers, including Salman Rushdie, Zadie Smith, Ian McEwan, Wole Soyinka and Jamaica’s own Booker Prize-winning novelist Marlon James.

Each edition introduces a distinctive programme of literary talent, offering audiences the opportunity to discover new voices and enjoy readings by established authors.

Conversations, Interviews & Open-Mic Sessions

Beyond traditional readings, Calabash features thought-provoking conversations, author interviews, panel discussions and lively open-mic sessions.

These intimate exchanges offer fascinating insights into the creative process, contemporary literature and the experiences that inspire writers.

Music, Culture & Entertainment

Literature is only part of the Calabash experience.

Live music, poetry performances and evening entertainment add another dimension to the festival, creating a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere where storytelling and Jamaican culture come together.

A Literary Festival by the Sea

What makes Calabash particularly special is its setting.

Hosted at Jakes in Treasure Beach, the festival unfolds beside the Caribbean Sea, surrounded by the laid-back charm and natural beauty of Jamaica’s South Coast.

The atmosphere is welcoming and informal, allowing visitors to enjoy exceptional literary experiences in a beautiful coastal environment.

Admission & Festival Information

One of Calabash’s most distinctive traditions is that all festival events are free and open to the public, with voluntary contributions welcomed to support the festival’s continued success.

The festival programme, participating authors and performance schedules are announced closer to each staging.
