Celebrate Jamaica's Maroon heritage through traditional music, dance and culture at Accompong.
The Accompong Maroon Festival, also known as Maroon Fest, is one of Jamaica’s most important cultural celebrations, honouring the history, resilience and traditions of the Maroon community.
Held annually in the historic village of Accompong, nestled in the rugged hills of Cockpit Country, the festival commemorates the peace treaty between the Maroons and the British in the 1730s and celebrates the legacy of legendary Maroon leader Captain Cudjoe, also known as Kojo.
This remarkable gathering brings together Maroon descendants, Jamaicans and international visitors to experience centuries-old traditions, ancestral ceremonies, music, dance and authentic Maroon cuisine.
Traditional Maroon Music & Dance
Experience the distinctive sounds of Maroon drumming, traditional songs and cultural performances that have been preserved and passed down through generations.
The blowing of the abeng, a horn historically used by Maroon warriors to communicate across the mountains, remains one of the festival’s most recognisable traditions.
Ancestral Ceremonies & Cultural Heritage
The festival includes important ceremonies honouring Maroon ancestors and their struggle for freedom.
Among its most significant traditions are gatherings at the historic Kindah Tree, where community members pay tribute to their ancestors through rituals, storytelling and cultural observances.
Visitors should respect ceremonial areas and follow guidance from community representatives, as some traditions are sacred.
Authentic Maroon Cuisine
Discover traditional Maroon cooking, including jerk preparations, roasted meats, ground provisions and other dishes reflecting the community’s culinary heritage.
Food vendors and local artisans add to the lively atmosphere, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the flavours and craftsmanship of the community.
A Celebration of Freedom & Resilience
More than a cultural festival, Maroon Fest is a celebration of identity, independence and the enduring spirit of the Maroon people.
For visitors interested in Jamaican history and authentic cultural experiences, it offers a rare opportunity to learn about one of the island’s most remarkable communities.
Accompong is located in the mountainous Cockpit Country region of St. Elizabeth. Visitors should allow sufficient time for the journey, as some roads are winding and mountainous.
Comfortable footwear, suitable clothing and some cash for local food and crafts are recommended.
For festival announcements, visitor information and updates, visit the Accompong Maroon Festival website.
